Make a resolution that will change lives
Can you imagine?
Having a new baby, and a few weeks after birth they appear to pick up a cold. Their health declines and after weeks and two doctor’s visits, the baby is so sick that you take them to the emergency room. The doctors try to figure out what is causing their low oxygen levels and place them in an oxygen tent. Two days later after a battery of tests, you find out that they have a genetic disease and are told that hopefully, your baby will live long enough to make it into their mid-teens.
Can you imagine?
Your child almost dying at the age of six weeks, the ambulance driving them to the nearest children's hospital. Upon arrival, the doctors work feverishly to stabilize your baby. Hours later he is transferred to the NIC, and has tubes everywhere. This was the story of our infant son. The doctors tell my wife and I to get some sleep, saying our son will have the best care possible that night. At 3 am the phone rings, a nurse at the NIC unit wants to advise us that our son is working too hard to breathe and they need our permission to put him on a ventilator (approval granted). Gradually over the next week his vital signs improve. He is moved out of the NIC and transferred to a private room for another couple of weeks. The children’s hospital trains us on how to administer his daily physical treatments, as well as his required diet and gives us the first round of meds that he will need to take for every snack and meal for the rest of his life.
Can you imagine?
Every single day, doing 2-4 physical treatments, each consuming approximately twenty minutes, plus a special diet along with taking meds before every snack and meal. Over his first three years of life, he would be hospitalized four times with pneumonia. Nurses at the children's hospital were always professional, regimented, and very understanding. I still don't know how they stay composed. During a couple of those stays, a child in the same or nearby room didn't make it back home.

Over the next eight years, he has many close calls with being hospitalized for pneumonia. In the late nineties, a new drug came out in yet another clinical trial (getting those approved is another story). However, this drug was different; we began to see improvements in our son's health. After the drug was approved by the FDA, our son began taking it whenever his health declined. It always improved his health within a couple of weeks. Over the next four or five years he began to take the drug every other month. During this time, a machine also became available that rapidly oscillated air in a chest vest that performed the airway clearance vs doing manual percussions. When he was thirteen or fourteen, we were fortunate to go on a trip to a remote part of British Columbia. We stayed at a cabin, where there was no running water or electricity. The cabin owners supplied us with a generator for his “Vest” that we used twice a day for his physical treatments. Any trip regardless of distance or duration from home required advanced planning for meds (24+ pills a day), physical treatments, cleaning of nebulizers and special diet.
Before we knew it, he was in high school, became active in sports, and remained incredibly healthy! Next was college, something we never thought possible, and then he met and married his college sweetie in 2011. In 2012, a new drug was approved that treated the fundamental cause of people with his mutation. It was amazing. A whole new world of possibilities and opportunities were unveiled. Over the next five years he remained healthy and was able to limit his treatments to when he caught a cold or flu.

This new wonder drug only helps 4 out of 100 patients with Cystic Fibrosis. As another CF parent recently said, "If there were a hundred people trapped in a coal mine and four were rescued, we all rejoice for them, but 96 are still trapped."
When a child with Cystic Fibrosis is born, the parents and all the siblings unwittingly join a club where they never intended to belong. The families become consumed by the healthcare requirements, physical treatments, and dietary needs. Many also engage in fundraising projects/events to try to help extend the lives of their loved ones. The regiment that the family is constantly on, makes it very difficult to find time to just enjoy life.
How CF might affect your family.
One in twenty people are carriers of the cystic fibrosis gene and carriers have NO symptoms. There were no clues in my wife’s or my family histories pointing to this genetic disease. Like me, you might be a carrier or your children might be carriers. When two carriers have a child, there is a 25% chance that the child will be born will CF and a 50% chance the child will be a carrier.
In 2018, you can change the lives of those yet to be born with CF and those living with CF.
Too many lives have already passed, but with each event and activity, hope increases that the other 96% will escape. My family and I continue to be involved. Over the years, we have had the pleasure to work alongside many people who have helped with “adding tomorrows”. Please join the fight to someday let those with Cystic Fibrosis say, "I used to have CF."

SEEDS OF INNOVATION; THEY ARE A SCATTERIN’
Approximately half of the world’s population has access to the Internet. And thanks to technology advancements and globalization, innovation can happen anywhere. Innovators around the globe have access to key ingredients of innovation and are hungry to make a difference for themselves, their families, communities, cities, countries or humanity in general. Like dandelion seeds in a high wind, innovation has been scattered globally and taken root like an invasive species.
Here in the United States, many of us don’t appreciate how dramatic of a shift this truly is, nor do we necessarily fathom how a leveled playing field will spur innovation globally. During some recent research, it was apparent that global innovation has already taken off and that innovators are solving problems and creating products. Whether it’s a person, a small group of people, or companies, innovators of the world are no longer constrained by traditional borders.
For brevity, during my research noticeable areas of change, were the spin up of freelancers worldwide. They might be consultants or gig based laborers, but they are no longer constrained to a traditional employer/employee model. These entrepreneurs are enabled by the support mechanisms of prosperity (education, healthcare, opportunities, e-commerce and monetary systems) to succeed in the world where the future of work appears to be headed toward opportunity based engagements.
The most devastating threats to the American way of life may well be our pride, failure to understand how critical education will be, and growing protectionist views. If we are to stay on the leading edge, we must ensure that we foster the vibrant growth of innovation and eliminate any barriers that might dissuade it!
Look no further that a window, those phone/cable lines are examples of legacy technologies that hang around. While we may utilize one to access the Internet in our homes, the other is dying. We now have full Internet access on our mobile devices. As unlimited data becomes ubiquitous, the question soon will be “why do we still have a DSL/Cable connection?” We must prevent legacy items from slowing us down.
Make no mistake; American ingenuity is being challenged more with each passing day. Anything that might discourage entrepreneurship must be eliminated to ensure that our American ingenuity continues with a leadership position. As you look around the world, it is very clear that the seeds of innovation are already growing rapidly.

THE RISE OF FRACTIONAL MANAGEMENT SERVICES
In today’s world, many businesses are stressed by the yelpification of their services and the glassdoorification of their salaries, benefits, and leadership styles. Many are also faced with unprecedented pressures to transform their businesses, to prepare for new disruptive competitors, or existing competitors gaining capabilities. These issues are further complicated by rapidly evolving digital technologies and the coming of AI.
As we enter 2017, hiring the best and the brightest has become a necessity to ensure viability. Competitive pressures are also being complicated by shortages of highly skilled individuals. In 2017, training programs will be more critical than ever, but salaries must be reviewed and adjusted, as new skills are mastered. Employers must also maintain a healthy work/life balance to prevent the malaise and discontent that develops when turnover rates become too high.
The days of employer/employee loyalty have long since passed. Today if we see a resume where an employee has stayed at a company for more than five years, we must ascertain if the candidate was advancing, or it might be a red flag. Many of us have also seen resumes where candidates change jobs as frequently as automobiles are traded.
Businesses need to tap into broad-based knowledge and skills using an On-demand model. This would help drive innovation, and facilitate revenue growth, while maintaining lean principles. Managers at all levels have a difficult time focusing and allocating enough attention to assigned tasks, let alone new ones that pop up. Valuable tasks must be automated whenever possible. Eventually, even the best and brightest may become overwhelmed, but not want to admit it.
Fractional managers have proven expertise and can serve as a trusted advisor to help businesses navigate short-term challenges. Fractional managers can assist companies in developing key players, balancing workloads when growth accelerates, or as big projects launch. They can also provide valuable skills in areas where they might be lacking or still developing.
Temporarily filling a vacant position when a manager unexpectedly gives notice can also be a healthy way to transition roles and discern if any changes might improve productivity. This interim approach also alleviates the inherent desire to fill a management vacancy rapidly. Interim managers can also assist with the transition by augmenting knowledge as needed.
